FEB 99] COVENTRY CITY COUNCIL PRESS RELEASE
Mini Soccer Comes To CoventryThe
Citys Sport and Parks Policy Team yesterday agreed to work in partnership with the
Coventry and District Minor League, Primary School Football association and voluntary
sports clubs to introduce mini soccer in Coventry.
Small soccer pitches will be developed in the citys parks in time for the next
season and the feasibility of developing a mini soccer centre in Coventry will also be
explored.
Cllr Dave Edwards, Chair of the Sports and Parks policy Teams, said today:
"We are delighted to support the FA who are looking to introduce children under 10
to football on a smaller pitch with smaller goal posts, simpler rules and less players. We
now need to raise money to develop sufficient numbers of mini soccer pitches in parks for
use by clubs, leagues and others in the city organising football for children of this age.
This is a great sponsorship opportunity for a local company to be associated with a really
exciting initiative for local youngsters."
The citys Sports Development Officers will co-ordinate the introduction of mini
soccer, raise the appropriate funding and undertake the feasibility of the mini soccer
centre. Interested sponsors can telephone Fiona Fortune.
NOTES
The FA is changing the rules for boys and girls under 10
playing football at all levels. The aim is to provide children with the best introduction
to football and then offer a structure through which they can develop their skills and
reach their potential.
Each County FA Association (Birmingham County FA represent
Coventry) is putting together an implementation plan for mini soccer in their area,
including a bid for 65% funding towards the costs of posts and pitches. Each area will
need to find their contribution to the total cost. The bids from all the County
associations will be assessed nationally and resources allocated towards the end of March.
