Coventry City Council's drive for support from across the city for a central
location for the new superhospital - has now added bus backing.
Posters on the backs of Travel West Midlands buses will be seen all over Coventry in
the next few days, in the next step of a campaign to get people to pledge their support
for the City Centre site, rather than the Walsgrave alternative.
Councillor Arthur Waugh, Deputy Leader of the Council, is certain the campaign will
help get the public on board. Launching one of the buses on Tuesday 9 February, he said,
"126,000 homes in Coventry are receiving leaflets with prepaid reply cards on
them. These cards can be returned to us to show backing for the City Centre option. We
know people will feel strongly about the hospital proposals and want to make it as easy as
possible or them to tell us their views. These bus posters are a reminder to everyone: to
get their cards returned, or to sign one of the dozens of petitions all over town. I hope
people will be quick to sign up and agree that a central location will best serve the
health needs of the people of Coventry."
Anyone wanting to sign a petition in favour of the City Centre Site, will find them
available at council receptions, libraries, and sports centres. Petitions can also be
found in some post offices, schools and supermarkets. A city wide opinion poll is being
carried out over the next two weeks.
The City Council believes that a City Centre location, on an extended Coventry and
Warwickshire Hospital Site is the best for Coventry- but acknowledges that the first
priority is to get a hospital of the quality that people in the area deserve, wherever it
is built.
Coventry Health Authority are set to make a decision between the two sites in early
March.
