The Right Honourable Dr Marjorie Mowlam, MP, Secretary of State for Northern
Ireland is to be admitted as an Honorary freeman of the City of Coventry in recognition of
her significant contribution to the peace settlement in Northern Ireland.
The unanimous resolution was passed at an extraordinary meeting of Coventry City
Council today.
Dr Mowlam, a former Coundon Court schoolgirl, will be presented with an illuminated
address at a ceremony of admission, likely to place in the ST Marys Guildhall,
Coventry, later in the year. A date has yet to be set.
Coventry City Council leader John Fletcher said:
"Mos contribution to the peace process in Northern Ireland cannot be
underestimated. It has earned her a place on the world stage. Coventry the city she
call home is proud to recognise that."
