Coventry City Councils
Housing Policy Team yesterday ruled on two applications from traders in Broad Park Road to
extend the range of goods and services they are permitted to offer under the terms of
their agreement.
The applications follow as a consequence of an ongoing dispute whereby Mr Cholan, who
runs the Post Office, was trading outside of his agreement and replicating some of the
goods on sale at Dial Stores where Mr Deeley is also providing a range of goods and
services not covered by his agreement.
The dispute over who can sell what has been rumbling on for a number of months but it
is hoped that the clear ruling by the Housing Policy Team will bring it to an end once and
for all.
Councillor Peter lacy, Chair of the Housing Policy Team said.
"We requested formal applications from both traders so that we could make a final
decision on a way forward. Having considered very carefully the application by Mr Chohan
to sell an additional range of goods from his Post Office, we regret that we have had to
say no to his request. This was due to the potentially detrimental impact that this could
have on other traders in Broad Park Road.
"In the case of Mr Deeley we have given our consent for him to sell an additional
limited range of goods which are not currently available in any of the other shops. We
have also given our consent for him to officially continue operating as an agent for the
EMEB. This is a much needed and greatly used service which many of the local residents
rely on.
"We are confident that local residents are well served by a balance of trade from
these shops which offer all the goods and services that they need, and it is our job to
make sure that continues to be the case."
