Four
representatives from Coventry will be attending the biggest ever European Urban Forum to
help set goals and policies that will affect the future of cities and towns all over
Europe.
Deputy Leader Arthur Waugh, Councillor Nick Nolan, John McGuigan Director of
City Development and David Taylor Head of Regeneration resources will be amongst
more than 500 representatives from all levels of government and the private and community
sector for th two day conference in Vienna on Thursday and Friday this week.
As well as helping to establish best practices and policies on employment and economic
growth, social inclusion, and local and global sustainability the Coventry representatives
will also hear the detail of the new European grant funding regime called the Fifth
Framework. The Fifth Framework Programme will run for three years from 1999 2002,
it contains more than £10 billion and covers areas such as enhancement of cultural
heritage, clean vehicles, air pollution measures and sustainable regeneration.
Councillor Nick Nolan Chair of the Economic Regeneration Policy Team said,
"Coventry has led Europe in emphasising the crucial role of cities as engines for
social, economic and environmental change. Our reputation for progress and innovation
amongst our city partners on the continent is unchallenged. And this forum offers us a
platform and opportunity to attract additional money so we can make a real difference in
bringing jobs and sustainability to our city."
High level ministers from all across Europe will be attending the conference including
our own Richard Caborn MP, Minister for the Regions, Regeneration and Planning who will
Chair the Workshop on Policy Integration and Synergy.
Speakers at the conference will include Neil Kinnock Commissioner for Transport and Dr
Monika Wulf-Mathies Commissioner for Regional Policy and Cohesion.
