The construction of the sculpture for
Bull Yard/Dresden Place will begin next week. The two artists whose sculpture was chosen
by the people of Coventry are to obtain the building material for the construction of the
sculpture from Parkside using a JCB and Dumper Truck.
The "Thread Through Time" sculpture is the idea of artists Rob Conybeare and
Uta Molling and consist of a 4 metre high cone shape, incorporating a 7 metre laser beam.
It shall be constructed using recycled stone, brick and concrete, and covered with
carvings to represent Coventrys illustrious history.
Councillor John Fletcher, Leader of the City Council, said
"I am delighted that work is now starting on what will be an exciting piece of art
which will add character and interest to the Bull Yard area in the heart of our city.
Coventry people voted for this sculpture and I am sure they are looking forward to
seeing the start of this work and get an idea of how it will look when completed and in
place in Bull Yard in the new year."
The Parkside site was specifically chosen for the material as a city centre site which
suffered devastation during the Second World War, to tie in with the artists aim of
building a spirit of reconciliation and a "thread through time".
The sculpture will reflect just one part of the public art planned for the Bull Yard /
Dresden Place area, and is due to be unveiled in February 1999.
Councillor Fletcher added
"The on-going improvements in Bull Yard forms part of the bigger picture to put
the heart back into our city centre. Sculpture, art, water features and the creation of
open spaces for people to enjoy has a major part to play in the regeneration of the city.
We want to provide a city centre that is exciting and vibrant and one that Coventry people
can be proud of and visitors admire."
