[06 NOV 98] COVENTRY
CITY COUNCIL PRESS RELEASE
Health Risks Of Chewing Tobacco
In PaanTuesday 10 November 1998, Shahi
Palace, 367 Foleshill Road, Coventry
This is the first seminar of this nature in the Midlands.
Qaim Zaidi will speak on the hazards of chewing tobacco in Paan. Mr Zaidi is an Health
promotion Specialist and a Counsellor on smoking with Asian Quitline and has
worked extensively on Tobacco related issues.
There is a growing concern for certain Asian Communities who chew tobacco in Paan.
Councillor Ann Lucas, Chair of the Councils Health and Care Policy Team said,
"The Council is very keen to highlight the health hazards associated with the use
of Paan and tobacco, which are not fully recognised in the Community. I hope that this
seminar will be the beginning of a programme that will have real impact on levels of
awareness."
Hillfields dentist, Farooque Suleman and Stuart Boulton, Director of Dental Public
Health, Coventry Health Authority will flag up the public health risks of chewing tobacco
through their presentations.
NOTES
Chewing tobacco quid is a common social habit in the Indian
sub-continent. The users are not aware of the danger to their health. There is strong
evidence that tobacco, as an additive to any chewing material is carcinogenic and also
that the combined habit of smoking tobacco and chewing paan even without tobacco as an
ingredient, can still cause oral cancer.
The seminar is funded through Hillfields Area Co-ordination
by the Governments Single Regeneration Budget.
