[28 OCT 98] COVENTRY CITY COUNCIL PRESS RELEASE
City To Study Transport Technology

State of the art style communications technology could become the future for traffic management in Coventry.

A study of the all singing, all dancing Intelligent Transport System (ITS), which would network the city and provide up to the minute information for road users, is to go ahead.

Cllr Arthur Waugh, Deputy Leader of the Council, who recently attended a conference looking at trails of ITS in European cities, said today;

"Feedback from Europe indicates that the use of these tools can bring real and tangible benefits for local people including increased safety, better information, greater comfort and reduced journey times. The study will test that the same benefits from ITS are achievable for Coventry."

The go ahead was given for the study at the Environment and Transportation Policy Team meeting on Monday 26 October.

Notes

Intelligent Transport Systems comprise a wide range of tools for managing transport networks based on information, communications and integration.

Implementation in Coventry would require co-ordination between several different organisations and authorities including commercial and retail interests, broadcasters, telecommunication operators, and public transport operators.
