Coventry grandmother Eileen Logie had never taken an exam in her
life. But just one year after signing up for adult education classes shes gained
qualifications in maths and English that she thought shed never get.
The 62 year old mother of five from Cheylesmore decided to return to education after
suffering a minor heart attack which meant she could no longer continue her cleaning job.
One year on she has gained a communications skills pass with merit and an achievement
test in numeracy with the Associated Examining Board, and shes decided to carry on
studying for a second year.
Mrs Logie, who is originally from Ireland and has three grandchildren, said:
"I had never taken an exam in my life. In Ireland you had to pay for your higher
education when I was at school and if you couldnt afford it that was it."
Mrs Logie is one of hundreds of students aged between 25 and 65 to attend free courses
run by Community Education in Coventry this year. The courses are held at centres across
the city including Cheylesmore Community Centre, Jardine Crescent Youth Centre, Hearsall,
Cardinal Newman and Barrs Hil Schools.
Councillor Joe Clifford, Chair of Coventry City Councils educational excellence
policy team said:
"Coventry has always recognised that education is for life and sought to provide
opportunities for those who have missed out during their period of statutory education.
Its really pleasing to see the achievements of those who have attended the courses
run by the Community Education Service."
Courses available include maths, English (up to GCSE) and computer studies. To find out
