[15 SEP 98] COVENTRY CITY COUNCIL PRESS RELEASE
City Council To Consult On Class Sizes

From Septermber 2001 all infant classes must have no more than 30 children.

The government has told all local education authorities to submit by 16 October 1998 a plan to show how the new class limits will be met.

Coventry LEA wishes to consult the public before it draws up the final plan. It is especially important to receive the opinions of parents of children who will be in a reception/infant class from September 2000.

Cllr Joe Clifford, Coventry City CouncilCouncillor Joe Clifford, chair of Education Excellence Policy Team, said:

"I'm sure everyone will agree with the Government's agenda for reducing class sizes to 30 for all children, particularly in their early years at school. Whilst within Coventry schools there will be very little change, we are anxious to create a situation where change is necessary - this can be easily managed - that's what the proposals set out in the consultation document aim to do."

Consultation documents and questionnaires are available in all schools and libraries; or telephone 01203 831532 for a copy. Parents with children in Key Stage 1 and nursery classes will recieve a consultation pamphlet.
