[03 SEP 98] COVENTRY
CITY COUNCIL PRESS RELEASE
Bakery Fined For Mice DroppingsA city bakery has today been fined by magistrates for dirty
conditions and failing to protect food from contamination.
Mrs Cosar Tasleen Shah, owner of the Covbake bakery in Eden
Street, pleaded guilty to two charges under the Food Safety (General Food Hygiene)
Regulations 1995 and was fined a total of £3,000 and ordered to pay £275.00 in costs.
Environmental Health Officers visited the bakery on 8
January 1998, following a complaint that a mouse dropping had been found on a bread roll.
Officers found:
- an active infestation of mice
- mice droppings on bags of flour and baking trays
- inadequate cleaning throughout the premises
An Emergency Prohibition Notice was served and the premises
were immediately closed. A quantity of bread rolls and several bags of flour were
voluntarily surrendered for disposal.
Mrs Shah's husband, Mr Mir Mohammed was also in court and
pleaded guilty to breaching a Personal Prohibition Order issued by magistrates on 17
September 1996, which banned him from participating in the management of any food
business. Sentencing for Mr Mohammed was adjourned to 24 September 1998 for probationary
reports.
Commenting on the successful outcome of the case,
Councillor John McNicholas, Chairman of the Environment and Transportation Policy Team
said:
"Officers from the City Council's Food Section work
extremely hard to ensure that local businesses meet minimum standards of food safety.
Where and when conditions fall below acceptable standards, we will take appropriate
enforcement action. It's good to see that the magistrates have endorsed the Council's
approach to protecting the health of Coventry residents."
