[03 SEP 98] COVENTRY CITY COUNCIL PRESS RELEASE
St Mary's Hall To Be Developed As Tourist Attraction

St Marys Hall courtyard - photograph by Avon StudiosA report to be presented to the City Council's Arts and Culture Policy Team next Wednesday (8 September), recommends that improvements should be made to St Mary's Guildhall as a heritage visitor attraction. The plan would retain the Hall's use as a venue for catering functions, while turning it into a much improved place for visitors.

Councillor Gillian Darby, Chair of Arts and Culture Policy Team, said:

"As part of the City Council's Heritage Development Policy, we are recommending that this asset be made better use of by developing it for visitors, while keeping its use for catering.

"It is an opportunity for us to tell the building's story and to reveal the part it played in the city's history."

The report envisages the improvements being in place in time for the 1999 visitor season, and being marketed as part of the overall promotion of attractions in and around the Cathedral Quarter.

The improvements would include an introductory video and a tour for unaccompanied visitors, supported by graphic panels, scenic props and figures.
