[22 JUL 98] COVENTRY
CITY COUNCIL PRESS RELEASE
Caribbean Beat Is Bang On TimeOrganisers of this year's Caribbean Festival - The Fresh Enterprise
Group - met with the City Council last week to finalise their plans to ensure the musical
celebration of the city's Caribbean culture is enjoyed by all and causes as little noise
disturbance as possible to surrounding residents living near the War Memorial Park.
The festival will take place on Saturday 25 July from 12 noon to 7pm and will
include football, basketball competitions, fairground rides, live music and food stalls.
Following a call for help last month, the City Council's
Leisure Services Department stepped in to provide a cash injection of £2,000 to ensure
the festival takes place. However, last year Council Noise Officers were forced to
'pull the plug' on the event.
Commenting after the meeting Clyde McIntosh, from the Fresh
Enterprise Group said:
"We are pleased that the City Council have decided to
help us meet the costs of running the event and are keen to ensure we know in advance what
noise levels are acceptable. I'm sure the event will be well attended and people
will love the carnival and colourful Caribbean costumes we have been designing. It's
a good fun musical event for all the family to enjoy, so we hope Coventry people come
along on Saturday."
Councillor Eric Linton who chairs the Council's
Licensing Panel and is a member of the Environment and Transport Policy Team said:
"Obviously we want people to enjoy the festival but at
the same time our Environmental Health Officers have a job to do. By having agreed
and set the noise levels with the organisers in advance, we hope to minimise the risk of
noise nuisance to others."
