Coventry City
Council has agreed to work with Centro to plan new bus access routes for the city centre.
Bosses of the West Midlands Transport Authority feared the City Councils
proposals to redevelop the centre would make it a no-go area for buses.
They said the Phoenix Initiative, the Councils millennium flagship scheme, would
restrict access to the Pool Meadow Bus Station and increase journey times because buses
would have to be re-routed.
But a Centro spokesman revealed that the Council has now agreed to consult them before
drawing up final plans. He said:
"The Council is still finalising the access strategy and Centro will now be party
to its plans. We will be consulted at all stages to make sure our buses have access to all
areas of the city centre.
"We had been very worried that buses would not be able to get into the area, and
at the end of the day bus passengers play a significant role in the commercial success of
the city centre."
