SEP 98] COVENTRY CITY COUNCIL NEWS
Coventry Car Parking BonusShoppers have received an early Christmas bonus from the City Council in
the form of frozen car park charges.
Long stay parking will be more
expensive, but prices at the short stay parks commonly used by shoppers will be unchanged
through 1999.
Liz Millett, chief executive of the
City Centre Company (Coventry) Limited, said:
"I am very pleased the council has
decided to freeze charges because to have done anything else would have deterred visitors
to the city just when we are doing all we can to attract them.
"We cannot match the free parking
offered by retail parks, but this is the next best thing."
Coventry's car parks cost the council £4
million a year and are running at a £250,000 deficit. To break even the charges for the
sixteen long stay parks have been increased by between ten pence and seventy pence
according to length of stay. The maximum charge will be £2.90 for over four hours. The
increases come into force from November.
