Coventry Best For National Stadium
Coventry
City Council has written to every English MP and all members of
Cabinet to push its case for being the home of the national stadium.
The
council has already made a strong submission to the working group
which is evaluating the bids from Wembley, Birmingham and Coventry,
and wants all MPs to be made aware of the city's advantages.
Coventry
is confident it could deliver a 90,000-seat stadium well ahead of
its rivals using the site in the north of the city earmarked for
Coventry City’s new stadium.
That
project already has planning permission, is on a brownfield site and
has good links to the motorway and rail network.
Council
Leader Nick Nolan said it was vital that all the English MPs were
fully aware that Coventry’s was best option for the new stadium.
He
said:
“We
are 100 per cent certain that we have the best and most
deliverable scheme of the three. There has been petty bickering
and regional fighting between London and Birmingham, but we
don’t need to be drawn into that because the facts of our case
speak for themselves.
“The
new stadium – wherever it is built – should be inspirational,
credible, achievable and deliverable. Our scheme fits all four
criteria.
“Work
on our site has been going on for over two years, and the creation
of a super stadium would not need a public inquiry, which also
gives us a distinct advantage.
“We
have sent the MPs a summary of our full admission and I am
confident that many will see that Coventry represents the best
option of the three.”
