MAR 01] COVENTRY CITY COUNCIL NEWS
Pupils To Grill City Councillors
BY
ANTONY HOPKER
Sixth
formers at a Coventry school are preparing to fire questions at
councillors next week as part of a drive to encourage young people
to have their say in local government.
Twenty
students from Ernesford Grange School and Community College will
be at a special public question time session at their school at
1pm on Wednesday.
Council
cabinet members are to hold their regular meeting in public before
opening themselves to questions from the audience. All members of
the public are invited.
David
Fry, head of sixth form at Ernesford Grange, said:
"The
students are really keen to get involved and have been thinking
of questions to fire at the councillors.
“I'm
pleased that they've been given this opportunity and hope that
their experience of Wednesday's cabinet meeting will encourage
them to understand their rights and responsibilities as young
adults."
Council
leader Nick Nolan said:
"Coventry
councillors are keen that more and more people feel able to
attend council meetings and local forums.
“And
I am always keen to back any opportunities for local people to
meet and question councillors.”
“All
city councillors want young people to have their say in local
government and realise their right to vote.”
People
who wish to send in questions in advance should contact Coventry
City Council, Room 44, FREEPOST CV2999, Council House, Earl Street
CV1 5BR.
Please
mark your envelope 'Cabinet question' and include your name,
address and a daytime telephone number. Efforts will be made to
separately answer any questions not taken during the meeting.
