City Pensioners Warned Over Blanket Risk
BY
ANTONY HOPKER
Pensioners
in Coventry are being urged to have their electric blankets tested
before the onset of winter.
Free
sessions running throughout next week have been organised by
Trading Standards Officers, West Midlands Fire Service and Age
Concern.
People
whose blankets fail the test will be given a £5 voucher towards a
replacement.
The
tests will be carried out at Radford Fire Station in Radford Road.
Visitors must make an appointment in advance by calling 024 7623
1999.
People
registered with Ring and Ride will be able to get transport to the
fire station as a special service is being run for the duration of
the tests.
The
initiative is being held to help reduce injuries to older people
more vulnerable to accidents involving blankets. More than 800
people a year are hurt in fires caused by faulty electric
blankets.
Coventry’s
Lord Mayor, Cllr Sheila Collins, said:
“Following
the great success of last year’s event, this provides another
excellent opportunity for pensioners to have their electric
blankets checked free of charge, before the winter months set in
and their usage greatly increases.
“A
quick check now could help reduce the risk of injury or a
household fire, so I would urge anyone with an electric blanket
to book their appointment now.”
Derek
Mcateer, West Midlands Fire Service Community Relations Officer,
added;
“We
are very proud to be working alongside all the other
organisations involved to provide this very important service.
Lynette
Clarke, Assistant Director of Age Concern Coventry, said:
“Keeping
warm is vital to older people, but many use electric blankets
for years without realising they need to be tested for safety.
”Often
people who are aware of the need to test are discouraged due to
the cost.”
