A temporary bridge will fall
into place in Coventry city centre on Sunday as part of the
development of the Lower Precinct.
A huge crane will drop the
construction into place at 3am to allow motorists to use the car park
in Market Way.
The parking area, which is on
top of Coventry Retail Market roof, will now be accessed from the
Barracks car park.
The bridge will cross Market
Way at the point where the Bedrock nightclub previously stood.
It is a temporary measure
until a new multi-story car park is built as part of the Lower
Precinct development.
An existing multi-storey at
the back of the Retail Market is being demolished.
Engineers will work on the
bridge for a week to make sure it is safe, and it should be re-opened
by the bank holiday weekend.
It will be single carriageway,
with traffic going in both directions being controlled by a traffic
light.
To help cars get out of the
car park quickly, another exit in the Barracks car park will be opened
and the Greyfriars Road ramp at the rear of Argos will be converted to
exit-only.
Once work on the bridge is
completed a temporary arrangement where the users of the Market Way
and City Arcade side of the car park got free parking will end.
The
bridge is expected to be in place for 18 months.
