APR 00] COVENTRY CITY COUNCIL NEWS
Early Voting Makes Promising Start
BY ANTONY HOPKERVoters in Coventry have
been quick to take up the chance to cast a vote for the local elections early in the city
centre.
Over 960 people used
the three polling stations set up in the Precinct on the first day of the trial scheme.
The ballot boxes will
remain open during shopping hours until tomorrow to try and persuade more people to vote.
A series of schemes
have been set up across the country to find different ways of encouraging a higher
turnout.
The most popular ward
with the city centre voters was Woodlands ward, which received 84 votes. Earlsdon had 83
and Bablake 82.
The ward that
attracted the least interest was Foleshill. Just 16 votes were cast.
Elections officer
Dennis Folkard said it would be some time until the success of the scheme could be
measured.
He said:
What we
dont know is how many of those would have voted anyway.
Well get a
feeling for that at the end of next Thursday.
The encouraging thing is the vast majority know what we are doing
and the most pleasing part is the number of people who have said it is a good idea.
