Memorial Plaques To Be Restored
BY ANTONY HOPKER
Plaques
in Coventry’s War Memorial Park remembering people who were killed
in the two world wars are to be repaired in a millennium initiative.
Workers
carrying out Community Service will start a project to inspect more
than 500 memorials in the park next month.
Each
plaque will be restored or replaced over the next 18 months in the
scheme, which is being paid for by the Rotary Club of Coventry and
Coventry City Council.
Stan
Gough of the Rotary Club said members had been fund-raising for some
time to support the cause.
He
said that relatives of the armed services personnel and civilians who
are commemorated could get involved in the project if they wished and
could contact him on 024 7641 8657.
Cllr
Dave Edwards, chairman of the Sports and Parks Policy team said:
“This
is a unique partnership which we as a city council are pleased to be
able to join and support in any way we can.
“The
memorial plaques in the park are in need of some attention, and this
partnership will ensure that each plaque is treated with the dignity
and care it deserves.”
Chief
Probation Officer Hillary Thompson added:
“This
work will show the public the good that community service can do. It
will be hard but worthwhile work.
“We
are proud to be associated with this partnership venture.”
