[27 AUG 99] COVENTRY CITY COUNCIL PRESS RELEASE
African-Caribbean Development Officer Appointed For Coventry

A former Community Education Worker who has worked for a number of years with the African-Caribbean community in Coventry is looking forward to her new role as the city's newly appointed African-Caribbean Development Officer starting on 1 September 1999.

This post was prompted by a report carried out by Professor Goldberg, which analysed the needs of the African-Caribbean community in Coventry.

Coventry born Barbara Hay will begin the key task of helping to develop equality of opportunities for the African-Caribbean community in Coventry with support from both the City Council and the African Caribbean Steering Group.

Barbara (who prefers to be callled Babs), a former chair of the Osaba Women's Centre for three years, said:

"I am looking forward to developing a strong working relationship with representatives from the African-Caribbean community. I hope that with their support we can work together to improve opportunities for this community."

Her academic qualifications include a Master of Education in The Management of Community Education and a certificate for Community and Youth work.

Her working experience includes seven years in the youth service, mostly with African-Caribbean young people. Babs has also worked at the Holyhead Youth Centre working with the black young people who attend the centre.

During her time as chair of Osaba Women's Centre, Babs helped develop a wide range of educational, cultural and social activities for black women and their children.

In 1993 she moved into Adult Education where her responsibilites included being accountable for the Adult Education programme in the Holbrooks area.

Vibert Cornwall, Chair of the African-Caribbean Community Steering Group, said:

"I am confident that Miss Hay will do a very good job for the community and I am appealing to everyone to give her as much support as she needs for the development of our communities."

Barbara will be working closely with Coventry City Council in assisting them and other organisations to address the needs of the African-Caribbean community.
