JUL 99] COVENTRY CITY COUNCIL PRESS RELEASE
No Butts It's In The BinCoventry people
keen to do their bit for the environment are being invited to a special sale of Composting
Bins and Water Butts at a promotion taking place on Sunday 18 July 1999 at the War
Memorial Park from 10am - 3pm.
The promotion means that people can purchase their
bins or butts at subsidised prices - £15 and £12 respectively - from the event set up
next to the Park and Ride facility at the entrance to the War Memorial Park.
The event has been organised by the City Council's
Recycling Team in conjunction with Blackwall Products and Severn Trent Water Ltd who have
agreed to subsidise the cost of the two products. People can either:
- turn up on the day and buy their Composting Bin or Water
Butt, or
- ring up and reserve their bin or butt and be given a time to
collect them from the Park during the afternoon.
People wanting to reserve one of the products can ring 0870
601 0217.
The idea behind the initiative is to encourage more people
to take up recycling in the home and help meet the government's target for 40% of citizens
to carry out home composting by the year 2000.
It also ties in with the government's announcement last
week that it was launching its own strategy to reduce waste nationally - a document
entitled 'A Way With Waste'.
Commenting on the initiative Councillor Maggie Rosher, Lead
Member for Recycling Issues, said:
"This is an ideal opportunity for Coventry people to
do their bit for the environment. This is an inexpensive and easy way in which people can
help to sustain the earth's natural resources which will in turn be beneficial for future
generations. Both the Water Butts and Composting Bins are being offered at a very
reasonable price, and I would urge all families to pop down to the War Memorial Park and
grab a real bargain!"
She added:
"There's no butts about the need for more people to
recycle their waste. I am very proud of Coventry's already impressive record in recycling
BUT I believe we all have the ability to do that little bit more to protect our living
environment as we approach the Millennium."
NOTES:
- Composting bins normally cost around £40 and water butts
around £30.
- On behalf of the Government the Audit Commission produce
Local Authority Performance Indicator figures to show how Councils are performing year on
year. Coventry comes 2nd out of all Metropolitan District Councils in the country for
recycling its waste.
