A
Coventry special school has recently been awarded the prestigious Sportsmark Gold award by
Sport England (formerly English Sports Council), and four secondary schools have received
Sportsmark Awards.
Sherbourne Fields joins an elite group of only six special schools across the country,
that have achieved Sportsmark Gold. In addition, Ernesford Grange School and Community
College, Cardinal Wiseman RC School, President Kennedy School and Community College, and
Tile Hill Wood School were all awarded a Sportsmark. The awards are given to those schools
who show that they have high standards of provision for Physical Education and sport, and
each school is assessed on the variety of sports and PE activities they offer.
Councillor George Duggins, Chair of the City Councils Education and Cultural
Affairs PCC says;
"Its good to know that Coventry schools are consistently achieving high
standards in sport and are being recognised for their hard work."
This means that almost 50% of Coventry secondary schools have achieved the coveted
Sportsmark award and that all of the schools who applied this year from Coventry
passed the required conditions.
Chris Smith MP, Secretary of State and Trevor Brooking, Chair of Sport England will
present the Gold Awards at Manchester Uniteds Old Trafford Stadium on Thursday 1
July 1999. Teachers and pupils from Sherbourne Fields will be attending the ceremony
and the next day a group from the school will be travelling to Blackpool to compete
in the BSAD (British Sports Association for the Disabled) National Championships.
