Lancashire
student Stuart Clewlow will return the Coventry Chain workers memorial plaque to the
City of Coventry on Friday 25 June.
Stuart will present the plaque to the Lord Mayor in a special ceremony to be held at
the Council House where Walter Anderton, who worked at the Coventry Chain Company for 50
years, will be guest of honour.
Councillor Gillian Darby, Chair of the Art and Culture Policy Team, was instrumental in
arranging the return of the plaque. She said today
"This is an important day for many people in the city who have associations with
the Chain Company. We are grateful to Stuart for rescuing and returning an important part
of Coventrys history and we are delighted to welcome him here."
The plaque is a memorial for 45 Coventry Chain Company employees who died in the First
World War. 16 year old Stuart Clewlow found it on a stall in Chorely and bought it for
£25 as he did not feel that it should be for sale so far from its home. He is giving it
back to the city as a present.
The presentation ceremony will take place at the Council House on Friday 25 June at
11am. As well as Walter Anderton, five other ex-Chain Company workers will attend.
The plaque will be re-instated on its original column and sited in Spon End in the
shadow of the Chain Factory in a ceremony to be held in the Autumn.
