City Councils sports and parks policy team are hoping to revitalise the nursery at
Leasowes Ave. by investigating all possible options in a bid to make it a viable
proposition and to make it work for the city.
Originally built ten years ago, the nursery was a sate of the art
construction, boasting computerised heating, venting and irrigation systems as well as a
stove house containing sub-tropical plants and fish. It is capable of
producing 300,000 plants over two bedding seasons. It has also been used by social
services to deliver training for people with mild to moderate disabilities.
Cllr Phil Townshend, member of the sports and policy team, said
"This is an opportunity to look again at options to utilise this valuable asset
and to put into practice the policy of social inclusion. All sorts of options are possible
including private and public partnership or with an educational or charitable
institution."
Cllr Val Stone, also a member of the committee, said
"It is possible that the nursery could provide plants for functions such as
mayor-making and other public functions as well as looking into sponsorship deals for
flowerbeds and hanging baskets. The income would help to offset staffing and maintenance
overheads."
