Alternative Vehicle Technology ConferenceOne
hundred and fifty people from across the West Midlands are seeking to challenge our
perceptions of transport. The Transport: Options for the Future conference is
all about encouraging people to consider alternative methods of getting work, school, or
to the shops. Business leaders will find out about environmentally ways of moving freight
and Local Authorities could be persuaded to buy gas-powered dustcarts.
This exciting and important conference is to be held on Wednesday 26 May at Coventry
Universitys Technology Park in Coventry.
The meeting is being organised by Coventry City Councils City Development
Directorate on behalf of the West Midlands Local Government Association. It brings
together health professionals, environmental groups, transport user groups, charities and
local authorities. Speakers will discuss public transport, cycling, walking and
clean fuel technology and there will be an opportunity to examine electric at
low-pollution-fuelled vehicles.
Councillor Mrs Penn Perry, Chair of the West Midlands Local government Association
Regeneration and Environment committee said
"Across the West Midlands, Local Authorities are seeking to promote alternative
vehicle technology as a way to make a real difference to the way people get about. This
conference is all about getting the local authorities and businesses to work together to
adopt more environmentally friendly solutions to transport problems."
NOTES
A variety of vehicles will be on display. These will
provide excellent still photo, film and radio opportunities. Vehicles including
electrically powered vehicles already used by Coventry City Council, a Gas Powered Bus and
a Rally Car provided by the Greenergy organisation.
The Key Note speech will be given by Prof. Chris Baines: a
well-known TV personality, award winning writer and independent environmental advisor.
The conference is being held while the local authorities
are in consultation over a Local Transport Plan, some of the issues raised by this have
received considerable media attention.
