The company have been offering a new package
that would give the Coventry workers the shortest working week of any car workers in
Britain.
Under the proposed deal the working week would be reduced
from 39 to 36.75 hours per week. In return the company are wanting the option to introduce
compulsory Friday night shifts during busy periods.
Union leaders had recommended that workers accept the
package on offer as overall they consider it a good deal.
Local members of the TGWU and Amalgamated Engineering and
Electrical Union however have voted by about 60-40 to reject the package.
After meetings yesterday with company representatives
failed to resolve the differences unions leaders announced the strike action.
The first one day strike will take place on Thursday 27
July followed by an all-out stoppage starting 21 August immediately after the summer
shutdown.
Peugeot have declared that they are "extremely
disappointed" and that workers should think very carefully about the consequences of
their action.
The company has generally had a very good record of
industrial relations with no strikes at the Coventry plant for over 20 years.
