SEP 00] HERITAGE OPEN DAYS NEWS
Walk Round The History Of Spon End
Spon
End residents are offering a chance for people to visit hidden parts
of the area as part of this weekend's Heritage Open Days.
The
second Spon End History Walk takes place on Sunday 17 September,
starting at 2pm outside the Odeon entrance, at the SkyDome, Spon
Street.
The
walk will trace the route of the River Sherbourne through the area,
exploring long gone street layouts and visiting sites representing the
stages in the history of the area from a mediaeval settlement through
the watch and ribbon weaving trades to the cycle and car industries.
Walkers
will be encouraged to contribute their own memories during the walk.
The
walk will be led by local historian, Mark Cook who said:
"Much
of the area has changed over the years, but we were surprised how
many reminders of the history of the area can be seen.
“The
presence of the river was vital in the development of the area as a
mediaeval settlement, enabling the area to carry out trades
associated with the cloth industry."
The
walk will also take in the bridge over the river moved from the canal
at Woodway Lane during the construction of the M6.
