Rugby Folk Asked Views On Rupert Plan
People
in Rugby are being asked their views this week on plans to set up a
trust dedicated to remembering Rupert Brooke’s birthplace.
A
scheme is being drawn up to buy the house in which the famous war poet
was born and establish a visitor centre there.
An
artist’s impression of the proposal is being drawn up by a company
called Centre Stage Promotions and put on display in the Clock Towers
shopping centre.
Schools
in the town are already getting involved in the project, with several
contributing visual interpretations of Brooke’s poems for the
display.
The
proposal is to set up a Rupert Brooke Birthplace Trust.
This
would involve establishing a registered charity and applying to the
Heritage Lottery Fund, other trusts and business for funding to buy
the house in Hillmorton Road where Rupert Brooke was born.
Schools
and colleges would be invited to make use of a visitors centre in the
house to learn more about the poet.
A
spokesman for Centre Stage Productions said:
“We
see the development of Rupert Broke birthplace as being a great
asset to Rugby, both for educational purposes and as a package of
tourist attractions aimed at the redevelopment of Rugby town
centre.”
Peter
Miller, who has written several books on Brooke will also be
appearing, and there will be recitals of Brooke's poetry.
Businesses
are being invited to a special presentation explaining the scheme
tomorrow at the Benn Hall, between 4pm and 7pm.
