Standard TriumphBRIEF HISTORY
The Triumph marque started life with the founding of the Triumph Cycle Company by Siegfried
Bettmann and Mauritz Schulte. The company
opened a cycle factory in Coventry in 1887. In 1902 they began production of the famous
Triumph motorcycle line. The first four wheel Triumph motor car appeared in 1923. In 1936
the car and motorcycle businesses split.
The car business was purchased by the Standard
Motor Company in 1945 to form the Standard-Triumph
Group. Then in 1961 the Group was taken over by Leyland.
In 1978 British Leyland made the company part of the specialist group Jaguar-Rover-Triumph Ltd. This union however only lasted a
couple of years. The marque of Triumph did not last much longer. The last Triumph model
being the Acclaim launched in 1982 after a joint
venture with the Japanese company Honda.
