Coventry Neighbours Go Down To The Woods
A
community woodland will be opened in Coventry this Saturday when the
finishing touches are made to a piece of former derelict land.
Children
from Canley will be finishing improvements to the Henry Parkes
Community Woodland on land behind Queen Margaret’s Road and
celebrating with a barbeque, face painting and circus skills.
This
final session marks a year of hard work by the residents of Canley.
They
have transformed their local woodland by designing and making
improvements to make the area safer, more accessible and more fun for
everyone.
The
children of the area have had most input and have spent hours making
woodland mobiles, wind chimes and sculpture artwork that will be
installed during the day.
The
work was made possible by a partnership between Groundwork Coventry,
Area Co-ordination and Area Regeneration at the City Council.
The
project was supported by Jaguar and funding was also given by
Barclays, BT and National Grid.
Debbie
Frost, Canley resident and former president of Heart of Canley
Residents Association, who came up with the original idea for the
project, said:
"This
is probably the best thing that has happened in Canley.
“The
woodland will be available to both young and old people and
hopefully it will be a meeting place for the summer months to
come.”
Claire
Bullen, Community Project Officer for Groundwork Coventry added:
“It's
hard work planting 300 meadow flowers. It's lucky that lots of kids
will help so that I can get some time to try some unicycling
too!"
It
is the second community project to come to fruition in the Canley area
in recent weeks, after the Community Centre in Prior Deram Walk was
refurbished.
