University Lecturers Take Action Over Pay
BY
ANTONY HOPKER
Staff
at Coventry University are withholding students’ marks and
boycotting exam boards as part of a national camping of
industrial action over pay.
Leaflets
are being distributed across campus and a letter has been
written to the Vice-Chancellor Mike Goldstein outlining the
lecturers’ view.
They
are upset that they have only been offered a 3 per cent pay
increase, which they say is below inflation.
There
is also disquiet that working conditions have not been improved
and that some contracts are under threat.
The
industrial action is supported by the higher education unions -
NATFHE, EIS, UNISON, MSF, GMB and TGWU - plus the National Union
of Students.
It
follows recent disputes surrounding the School of Engineering,
where jobs are now at thereat because of a £1 million loss, and
anger among students and staff over inadequate resources at the
Ellen Terry building, the former Odeon.
