Come To University To Taste The Grape
If
working out formulae, inventing theories or dreaming up designs sounds
like too much hard work, about a university course in the art of
quaffing?
People
who prefer to learn through the haze of a good wine will be well
suited to a course on offer at Coventry University.
It
is one of the few universities in the country to offer the range of
wine courses from the Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET).
The
course will help people learn the difference between Sancerre and St
Emilion, and also includes a trip to the Champagne region in France.
Course
organiser Steve Smith said:
“These
courses are the trade qualifications for the wine industry, and are
a must for anyone contemplating a career in wine - but can also be
studied simply for enjoyment, to find out more about wine and how to
enjoy it.”
And
following the increased popularity in the study of grapes, a variety
of ways of taking the course have been introduced.
Dr
Smith said:
“Previously
we have only offered these courses during the evening, but in this,
our sixth year, daytime classes and home study packs are being
introduced.”
“For
the last couple of years the courses have also included a study trip
to the French vineyards, and this year we are visiting the Champagne
region.
“Here
we will visit the vineyards and meet the growers, and will be based
in the beautiful and historic city of Reims.”
Last
year nearly 100 people studied wine courses at the University, from
Certificate to Diploma level, and student continued their success in
the exams, achieving a 95 per cent pass rate.
But
if the thought of remembering the difference between a Malbec and a
Merlot proves too much of a headache, there is no obligation to take
an exam at all.
