£20m Of Learning Chances In Coventry
Coventry
University’s £20 million library is being hailed as a more than
just an addition to the skyline as it prepares to open a new chapter
on learning in the city.
It
is the first time in the university’s history that so many learning
resources have been brought together under one roof.
The
building, which has a series of distinctive towers, will contain the
largest concentration of computers on campus, with 350 networked
machines. It will open next month in time for the new academic year.
University
librarian Pat Noon said:
“This
is a really exciting building, very light and spacious, creating an
excellent learning environment.
“For
the first time it will bring together a whole range of learning
resources under one roof, creating a new focal point for
students.”
The
new library will bring together for the first time under one roof the
collections from the nursing and midwifery, Art and Design and
performing arts libraries, as well as the books and periodicals from
the current Lanchester Library.
A
new multimedia section will also be created bringing together the
formerly separate video, CD and slide libraries, and there will also
be a new Information Skills Suite.
Pat
added:
"This
facility, staffed by experts from the university's Library and
Computing Services teams, will enable our students to get the very
best from both the traditional and the electronic information
environment.
"Over
the last four years we have increased expenditure on our book stock,
targeting the university's growth areas of study.
The
new library will also contain a Waterstone’s bookshop, which will
replace the current academic shop in Earl Street.
Staff
face a race against time to get the books on the shelves as they have
not had access to their new store.
There
will also be a resources shop, providing printing, copying and
photographic services, and a new catering outlet for students.
Pat
added :
"This
really focuses facilities for students in one state-of-the-art
building, significantly enhancing the learning experience.
"This
new library will not just be somewhere you come to pick up books, it
will be a complete learning centre for our students."
