Volunteer Michelle Makes Mark With Mural
A
Coventry school has been brightened up with a mosaic mural to
celebrate the millennium.
The
creation at St Benedict’s RC Primary School in Leigh Street,
Hillfields, has been put together by Coventry University student
Michelle Duffus.
Michelle,
a second year Fine Art student, worked alongside teacher Melanie
Lovelock to create the mural with the pupils of St Benedict’s
following a competition among them to find ideas for the design.
The
finished mural represents life and wishes in the year 2000 and was
realised using a variety of materials including spray-painted pebbles,
Lego and a brass door knob.
Michelle
got involved with the project as part of a Millennium Volunteers
scheme. It is a new nationwide initiative aimed at people aged between
16 and 24 who want to volunteer their time for the benefit of others.
Coventry’s
scheme is based at Coventry University Students’ Union, and is a
joint project with the University and the City Council’s Area
Co-ordination Teams.
It
is open to anyone from the city who would like to get involved in a
project to benefit their community.
Commenting
on the Millennium Mosaic project St Benedict’s head teacher Maureen
Perry said:
“It
was very helpful to have Michelle working alongside Melanie. It made
this part of our on going Millennium celebrations run smoothly - and
with stunning results.”
In
addition to the Millennium Mosaic project Coventry University Computer
Science students are also planning to construct a website for the
school.
Other
projects currently being undertaken by the University’s students
include a psychology student working at the Gosford Asian Day Care
Centre in Hillfields, and students working in care homes for the
elderly around the city.
