University Buys Coventry Club
Coventry
Working Men’s Club is to be turned into a students’ union
following the building’s sale to Coventry University.
Committee
members at the Cox Street club have been campaigning for more than a
year to move out of the city centre to new premises in Allard Way.
They
argued that a large number of their elderly members were too scared to
come into the city centre at night.
Members
bitterly opposing the move warned that moving the club would put
people off visiting as they would not be able to get there on the bus.
But
the building has now been sold to Coventry University, who will
convert the venue into an extra students’ union building.
It
will be used as another entertainment venue, designed with
international students in mind.
Coventry
Working Men’s Club will move temporarily to the Coventry Building
Trades Club in Whitefriars Street.
It
is expected to move by 1 September and university bosses hope to have
their latest building ready for use by the start of the new academic
year.
Senior
Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Gareth Thomas said:
“This
will be an excellent development for our large and thriving
Students’ Union.
“It
will provide much needed extra space and facilities for our
international students, as well as a new students’ entertainment
venue.”
Caroline
Campbell, Vice President, Education and Welfare, for Coventry
University Students’ Union said:
“This
development will help increase the participation of international
students in the activities of the Students’ Union, providing
facilities for clubs and sports societies.
“This
development marks a very exciting time for the Students’ Union at
Coventry University.”
