FEB 99] SPON END FORUM PRESS RELEASE
Spon End Millennium Wakes Week Planning Under WayOrganisation of the Spon End Millenium Wakes Week is well under
way.
The event, which is to be held in the week
leading up to 10 July 1999 is the first of a two part celebration of the Millennium. It
will be entitled 'End of an Era' and will look back at the history of Spon End, now
Coventry's oldest residential area. The second event, 'New Beginning' in July 2000 will
look to the future.
The Wakes Weeks have now attracted funding
from Coventry City Councils Arts Initiative as well as private sponsorship. A grant
application is also to be submitted to the Lottery Millenium Fund.
Even at this early stage a number of events
are already being organised for Spon End on 10 July including a fun fair, street market,
beer festival and street entertainment. A number of churches and schools also plan to hold
their summer fetes on that day.
Over the coming month organisers will be
contacting every community organisation, school, church and business in the area to seek a
commitment to organise or support an event during the Wakes Week. It promises to be the
biggest event in Spon End since the original Wakes Weeks were banned over 100 years ago.
Anyone interested in getting involved, or
artists and performers willing to give their time, should contact the Spon End Area
Coordination Office, phone 01203 632123.
