[19
FEB 99] SPON END FORUM PRESS RELEASE
Community Oppose Carbodies/LTI ProposalsPlans unveiled by LTI/Carbodies this week have angered community and
residents groups in Spon End and Coundon.
The Coventry taxi company has submitted
plans to the City Council for its current site on the Holyhead Road to be developed into a
retail park, thus doubling the area of retail space currently occupied by Alvis Park. But
Chair of the Spon End Forum, Colin Walker has already written to Councillor Sheila Collins
to express local opposition to the plans.
The Forum represents four residents
associations as well as other local community organisations in the area, and is
co-ordinating the objections of local groups.
Kevin Noble, Chair of Red Brick Residents,
said:
"There is no local support for this
plan. There is just not the infrastructure to support a second retail development in the
area. Spon End and Lower Coundon residents are already trapped in their area by weekend
tail-backs and traffic jams on the Holyhead Road."
Residents groups in Spon End and Lower
Coundon will also be forming alliances with residents groups around the current Alvis
Retail Park to ensure that further retail development is blocked.
The Spon End Forum has submitted its own
ideas for the site and would like to see the site retained as light industrial or
residential.
