North
East Coventry To Get Its Own Station
Residents
of North East Coventry will be taking to the airwaves soon following
the awarding of a grant for a community radio station.
Coventry
North East Radio has been given £93,000 over three years, and could
be on the air within six months.
The
new station will broadcast to homes in Wood End, Bell Green, Henley
Green, Manor Farm and parts of Potters Green, Foleshill, Holbrooks,
Longford and Walsgrave.
Residents
of these areas will be responsible for writing news bulletins and
presenting music shows.
Enthusiasts
will be trained in broadcasting, community research skills,
information technology, audio engineering and general media skills.
Courses
on these topics will be run in the Wood End and Bell Green areas.
Raynee
Skelsey, secretary of the steering group that has worked to launch the
new station, said:
“This
is wonderful news. Now we can push on by applying for a restricted
broadcast license. In the meantime we are looking to develop our
premises and to buy equipment.”
The
radio project was set up with guidance from the Community Based
Economic Development Partnership and help from staff based at Coventry
and Warwickshire Co-operative Development Agency and Coventry North
East Area Co-ordination. This guidance was made possible with funding
from the European Regional Development Fund.
Raynee
added:
“We
are grateful for their help. Now we want to get everything moving
and we hope the courses will attract people who will eventually
staff the station and go on to advanced courses.”
CNE
Radio is now inviting all interested residents of North East Coventry
to get involved and find out more for themselves. Those interested can
