MARCONI COMMUNICATIONS PRESS RELEASE
GPT Win £6m BT ContractBT has awarded a
contract to GPT Card Technology, a division of Marconi Communications, for six million
pre-paid account cards to be produced over a period of 30 months.
The new BT Globalcard will be sold primarily from the UK to
international leisure travellers (British going abroad and foreign visitors to the UK).
To cope with production volumes, GPT has installed new
machinery in its secure manufacturing site in Coventry - an investment that will augment
GPT Card Technology's overall capabilities.
"Our commitment to quality and the unique availability
of the Premier Service helped win this contract against strong competition. We are proud
to enhance our relationship with BT through this contract,"
said Ian Wilson managing director of GPT Payphone Systems.
Available in £10 and £20 denominations, the BT Globalcard
differs from existing cards as its value is not within the card itself, but in the account
to which it is automatically linked via a unique access number.
The card is accompanied by a user guide giving the customer
full access details. Callers dial the given access number, input the account number on the
card followed by the number they wish to call. On connection, the call charge is deducted
immediately from their account so differing from a BT Chargecard in which the call charge
is added to the customer's overall telephone bill.
GPT Card Technology is a division of GPT Payphone Systems,
a world leader in the supply of Intelligent Payphones and associated management systems.
Both are part of Marconi Communications, a world leader in
smart broadband transmission and network integration.
