Marconi
has won a £20 million order for optical fibre equipment for
Denmark, which will be built at its Coventry base.
A
new contract covering a three-year period has been signed with
Tele Danmark to update the telecoms operators’ network.
The
new deal has built on a previous successful contract supplying
the Danish firm with the Synchronous Digital Hierarchy
technology. SDH was developed in Coventry and is built at the
New Century Park site.
SDH
is a system for digitally transmitting voice, video and data
over optical fibre. It can automatically repair breaks in
information being transmitted, and avoid telephone or internet
calls being broken or lost.
Peter
Brown, Marconi’s president for Europe, Middle East, Africa and
Australasia, who is based in Coventry, said:
“This
contract provides further proof that Marconi is the world
leader overall in SDH technology.
“We
have had several major successes within optical networking
during the past three months.
“We
have won an important deal with BT to build Europe’s most
advances all-optical network, as well as orders from telecom
Italia, Fibernet of Germany, Telford of the Netherlands and
the Belgian national telecoms operator, Belgacom.”
