[29 JUL 99] MARCONI
COMMUNICATIONS PRESS RELEASE
Latvian Win Leads To Baltic Expansion For Marconi CoventryLatvian national telecommunications operator, Lattelekom, has
ordered the world's most advanced telecommunications system from Marconi Communications.
The contract, to supply the Coventry-built networking
technology along with full local support, will enable it to carry greater volumes of call
traffic.
To support this order and the rapid growth of the Baltic
telecommunications market, Marconi have now opened a new sales and marketing office in
Latvia's capital, Riga. The Baltic Regional office will support the company's marketing
activities in Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia.
Kamal Mokrani, Coventry-based Marconi Communication's
regional sales manager, said:
"Marconi is a market leader in Central and Eastern
Europe with an £80 million track record in telecoms infrastructure sales over the last
three years. Lattelekom's order for the highest level of SDH transmission is an indication
of the region's ambition to establish a world beating telecoms infrastructure and its
confidence in Marconi to deliver it."
Lattelekom was established in 1994 after an international
bid for tenders that was organised, financed and supervised by the European Union through
its Phare programme.
Following the Lattelekom Umbrella Agreement under which 49%
of the company's shares were acquired by Tilts Communications, the company committed to a
three year infrastructure upgrade programme with Marconi to enhance service delivery to
the country's 2.5 million population and rapidly growing business community.
The order will enhance Lattelekom's advanced
telecommunications backbone network and provide the capacity to meet the country's growing
demand for data services, including the Internet.
Marconi Communications is a wholly owned subsidiary of GEC,
a world leader in smart broadband optical networks, access equipment, switching technology
for the Internet and network integration. GEC's recent acquisition of US-based FORE
Systems has positioned the company to be a leading player in the new public network and
enterprise markets in addition to its established market leadership in the carrier and
operators sphere. It has sales to more than 140 countries, a major presence in Europe, the
USA, Africa and the Asia-Pacific Region.
