[05 MAY 99] MARCONI
COMMUNICATIONS PRESS RELEASE
Marconi In US$10m China ProjectThe Marconi
Communications' joint venture company, Shanghai GPT, has been awarded a series of new
contracts by the Chinese Ministry of Railways (MOR), as part of a programme of works
called 'The Sixth Railway Project'.
Backed by the World Bank, the US$10 million project
involves dozens of initiatives to create modern, high-speed networks which will improve
communications across the national rail system.
The new orders, comprising three contracts for Marconi's
Coventry-built world-leading SDH (synchronous digital hierarchy) transmission equipment
and EM-OS management systems, are in addition to a first contract awarded by the MOR in
December - and hailed by Marconi as a milestone in its fast-growing relationship with
China.
Shanghai GPT is supplying the ministry with products for
all of the contracts, sourced from both the Marconi factory in Coventry and its Shanghai
factory.
This comes less than a month after the company announced an
order for SDH equipment from Dalian UNICOM, the Chinese network operator serving the
country's second biggest port of Dalian to enhance the capacity of its mobile phone
network.
Marconi Communications is a world leader in smart broadband
transmission and network integration. It has sales to more than 140 countries and is
wholly owned by GEC, a global manufacturer of intelligent electronic systems.
NOTES
Shanghai GPT was set up in 1996 between Marconi
Communications and the Shanghai Railway Communications Equipment Factory (SRC), the
state-owned manufacturer of telecoms equipment.
