Pane-staking Works
Starts On Precinct Roof
A
“space age” roof will land in Coventry this week when work to install
the glass cover to the Lower Precinct gets under way.
The
glass roof has arrived in sections and will be painstakingly attached to
the huge frame that has been constructed.
It
is hoped that the covering will help speed up the rest of the project,
which is starting to slip behind schedule.
Shop
fronts in the 1950s structure have been stripped out as part of the
multi-million pound improvements.
They
are due to re-open in the autumn when a host of big name stores including
TJ Hughes and H&M Hennes are expected to move into Coventry.
The
roof will be installed in two phases with workers first being stationed on
scaffolding, then on a “walk-on” net on the glass itself.”
Peter
Collard of the City Centre Company said:
“The
development of the roof takes us another step nearer to the Lower
Precinct completion.
“Work
has been progressing steadily over recent months and visitors to the
city would have noticed the huge white frame supports which have already
been built to hold the glass roof sections in place.”
Terry
Evans, project manager for Costain Skanska, added:
”The
work on the development is running behind schedule, all efforts are
being made to meet the anticipated completion date.
“The
erection of the glass roof will make a huge difference to how the
development looks and will allow us to continue the next stage of works
on the bottom and top floors of the development.
“We
aim to have the first shops available fitting by late June this year,
this will allow the new retail units to begin their preparation for the
grand opening in autumn.”
