New Bridge Now Open To Traffic
Cars
have rolled across a temporary bridge linking Coventry’s Market and
Barracks Multi Storey car parks for the first time today.
A
steel bridge has been installed after the permanent crossing was
demolished as part of the Coventry city centre redevelopment and it will
be in use for the next 18 months until the Lower Precinct phase of the
work is completed.
The
original "Bedrock" bridge was taken down last month and
motorists have had to follow temporary directions to use the 400-odd
spaces above the Arcade and Retail Market.
Mark
Nicholls, the City Centre Company's car parks operations manager, said the
new bridge would keep the spaces in use.
"The
access up and down the spiral ramp off Greyfriars Road was only ever a
short term solution and without a temporary bridge we were faced with
losing the spaces for over a year which was not acceptable.
"We
have now set up four exits - three from the multi storey car park and
via the Argos spiral - and two entrances via the multi-storey.
“All
entrances and exits will be well marked and a series of directional signs
installed.
"The
bridge across Market Way has been fully tested for safety but we are
asking pedestrians to use the nearby stairs to go from one car park to
the other.
“Traffic
lights will control the flow across the bridge but it is not suitable
for foot traffic.
"The
public have been very patient and hopefully something nearer normal
service will now be resumed."
