Steve, 41, spent most of the first part of his life
working in his family firm of builders. Now, as newly appointed Self-Build Manager at
Ballingers of Leamington Spa, he is supplying expert advice to people building their own
homes.
"It is an unusual service and one I had never heard of
until I joined Ballingers in another capacity twelve months ago," says Steve.
"I was asked to take over this role only recently and
I find it fascinating. I am researching every possible aspect of self-build and we offer a
complete service from buying a plot of land to financing the project, through the planning
and design stage, to guiding the client through every phase of the building work.
"As a builder I never offered advice unless I was 100
per cent sure of my facts and I do not intend to change that philosophy in this new role.
"I am gathering information about the services
provided by chartered surveyors, quantity surveyors, architects and mortgage providers as
well as all the building materials needed.
"We can already identify potential building plots
through our extensive and unique internet service so we can advise customers from the
first glimmer of an idea to fixing the last roof tile.
"I am also aiming to expand the service to people who
are building extensions to their homes and want to manage the projects themselves."
And those clients who spend up to a certain amount in
materials from Ballingers at various stages of build, will be offered discount prices on
kitchens and bathrooms.
"It was an inspired concept by Ballingers and it will
give me great satisfaction to advise people how to build their own homes to the standard I
used to build them when I was in that trade," said Steve.
Ballingers have several self-build projects in progress in
the south Warwickshire area and attract a significant number of inquiries through their
website each month.
Graham Ballinger, managing director of Ballingers, said:
"Steve is the ideal man for the job because of his
hands-on house build experience. People dont have to take his word for it
they can see his work all over this area.
"He will be able to develop our self build service to
a much higher level and perhaps encourage more people to get actively involved in self
build projects."
