SEP 00] FUEL PROTESTS
No Lessons Today In Some County Schools
By
ARRYN BUGGINS
Schools have
closed in the petrol crisis, as there is no fuel to get staff
and pupils to lessons – or home again.
About 50
Warwickshire schools are without buses, and 21 have announced
closures affecting today, and early next week.
North
Warwickshire borough is the only part of the county to have all
of its schools open. In other areas, it is mainly secondary
schools and rural primary schools that have large catchments
areas that have closed.
Eric Wood,
county education officer, said:
“We are
concerned that in this situation some pupils might be able to
travel to school but not able to get home later in the day.
“We also
cannot rule out the possibility of pupils arriving at schools
where staff have not managed to get to.
“I very
much regret the inconvenience this may cause to parents but I
am sure they will appreciate my main concern is that safety
and welfare of their children.”
