SEP 00] FUEL PROTESTS
Get On The Bus... While You Still Can
Limited fuel
supplies are now threatening public transport services, with
buses off the roads tonight, and fuel running out for diesel
trains.
Bus services
operated by Stagecoach Midland Red are stopping at 7pm tonight,
with no evening services at all.
School buses
are operating today, but there has been no decision on what
happens from tomorrow.
General bus
services restart tomorrow morning, but a full service is not
guaranteed.
Travel West
Midlands said it has enough fuel to keep going for about a week,
and is operating services as normal.
Most Coventry
and Warwickshire commuters are likely to escape rail problems as
the west coast main line through Coventry, Rugby and Nuneaton -
giving links to London and Birmingham – is operating as
normal.
But the line
through south Warwickshire and local lines running up to
Coventry and Nuneaton could face problems.
Leamington,
Warwick and Stratford only have diesel trains services - so does
the north-south line from Hinckley and Nuneaton through Bedworth
and Coventry to Leamington.
Central Trains,
which operates most local services, said it has enough diesel to
run services for four days. There are no plans to curtail
services in the meantime. The
company said:
“The
Birmingham to Coventry line is one of our busiest, but as it
is electric, it should be unaffected. We have our own supplies
which should last about four days on diesel lines.
"We keep
hearing conflicting information, but we have been told that
public transport is the second priority - after the emergency
services.”
