APR 98] WARWICK ARTS SOCIETY PRESS RELEASE
Concerts In Warwickshire Churches'Concerts
in Warwickshire Churches' is one of the principal annual promotions by Warwick Arts
Society and is billed as a prelude to the 1998 Warwick & Leamington Festival, which
will run 1-11 July.
The artists involved are mostly young or with Midlands
connections and this year there are four early music groups, two string quartets, a mixed
wind and strings ensemble from Birmingham (Ullenhall), a pianist from France
(Snitterfield) and for the first time in the series, we bring together a Royal Shakespeare
Company actor and a young harpist in a newly devised programme (Merevale).
The 1998 series brings music to nine churches, all of them
having previously benefited from the scheme. These are: North Warwickshire Borough Council
- Merevale and Over Whitacre, Rugby Borough Council - Clifton on Dunsmore, Stratford
District Council - Aston Cantlow, Bidford on Avon, Ilmington, Kineton, Snitterfield and
Ullenhall
All the local authorities and Warwickshire County Council
and West Midlands Arts help the series with subsidies. Further help comes from trusts and
generous individuals and the whole series is sponsored by Jet Petrol.
Festival Director Richard Phillips says:
"This series brings soloists who perform in Symphony
Hall and all over the world into small Warwickshire villages and introduces to the region
other artists tipped to be the stars of tomorrow. The audiences are a mix of people living
within walking distance of the churches and those who make the concerts are given an
excuse to get to know beautiful parts of the county and our rich ecclesiastical
architecture."
These audiences can benefit from the Warwickshire
Super-Rover season ticket and this and tickets for individual concerts which run from 9
May to 20 June are obtainable locally and from the Warwick & Leamington Festival Box
Office in Warwick on 01926 496277.
